Systematic review of FGDC Standards program of work

The FGDC is undertaking a systematic review of all projects in the FGDC Standards program of work.

There are over 40 standards projects in the FGDC standards program of work. Half of these projects have resulted in FGDC-endorsed standards. The other half consists of projects in development.

Thirteen of the FGDC-endorsed standards were endorsed before 2000, but have not been subject to the five-year maintenance review required by FGDC standards directive #9, Maintenance. At the same time, several projects in development have not advanced beyond approval of a project.

The systematic review of FGDC Standards program of work has several objectives:

  • Evaluate relationship with relevant voluntary consensus standards - OMB Circular A-119 requires Federal agencies to use voluntary consensus standards whenever possible
  • Plan FGDC Standards activities
  • Promote FGDC Subcommittee and Working Group accountability

Throughout the remainder of FY 06, the Chair of the FGDC Standards Working Group (SWG) will be contacting individual Subcommittee and Working Group chairs to arrange for a phone interview in which to set a timeframe for review of individual standards projects. Subcommittee and Working Group chairs will then add standards review to their work plans and report on progress in semi-annual reports.

The SWG Chair will be contacting the chairs in phases, starting with those standards that have been endorsed the longest. In preparation for the initial interview, the FGDC requests that all chairs:

  • Familiarize themselves with FGDC Standards directive #9, especially Section 3
  • Use the sortable FGDC standards program of work table to identify those standards for which your organization serves as sponsor or maintenance authority.
  • Review the guidance questions (under related content, below) and provide preliminary responses to these questions.

The FGDC looks forward to working with you as we advance the FGDC standards program of work.
