2009 Metadata Training Workshop Mystic, CT July 30

A 2009 GIS Metadata Training Workshop will be held in Mystic, CT on July 30, 2009. This one-day training workshop is organized and conducted by the Penobscot Indian Nation Department of Natural Resources. The project is sponsored by Federal Geospatial Data Committee (FGDC), United States Geological Survey (USGS), and supported through the NSDI CAP I grant.

The intended audiences for this workshop are the tribal GIS workers and GIS users preferably in the New England area, but all other people are welcome.

The training workshop will provide participants with basic metadata knowledge and metadata implementation skills, and help tribal GIS users to understand what metadata is, how to use it to find more GIS dataset from other sources, and how to create metadata for their own GIS dataset.

The basic class topics of the workshop will include: What is metadata; Why metadata is important to tribal government; What is National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), and Framework Data; What is the FGDC’s Content Standard for Geospatial Metadata (green book); How to create Metadata using ArcCatalog (FGDC’s Metadata editor) with hands-on exercises; Geospatial Data One-stop and Metadata Clearinghouse, how to use metadata, and how to search for dataset with archived metadata.

The workshop is designed to provide specialized training for the GIS users to understand and to use metadata as a tool for data management. The primary goal is to provide participants with the opportunity to develop and publish geospatial metadata for their own datasets using a metadata editor, and the FGDC metadata clearinghouse. Instruction will include some tips to write a good metadata, and to avoid common errors.
