An interagency conference call / WebEx was held on July 25 for Federal agencies to share geospatial data holdings and websites useful for hurricane preparedness and response. Discussion included response needs and information gaps.

Geospatial Line of Business Presidential Initiative

The Geospatial LoB will identify opportunities for optimizing and consolidating Federal geospatial-related investments to reduce the cost of government and improve services to citizens. Cross-agency coordination of geospatial activities is still lacking and is needed to help identify, consolidate, and/or eliminate redundant investments. The establishment of the Geospatial LoB will result in a more coordinated approach to producing, maintaining, and using geospatial data, and will ensure sustainable participation from Federal partners to establish a collaborative model for geospatial-related activities and investments.

FGDC Adopts Policy on Recognition of non-Federally Authored Standards

The FGDC Steering Committee voted to endorse the FGDC Policy on Recognition of Non-Federally Authored Geographic Information Standards and Specifications in November 2005. This policy establishes a mechanism for FGDC recognition of non-Federally authored standards or specifications that are relevant to the missions and spatial data responsibilities of Federal agencies as set forth in Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-16.

Interior Secretary Salazar announces endorsement of Wetlands Mapping Standard

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today the adoption of a Wetlands Mapping Standard that provides minimum requirements and guidelines for wetlands mapping efforts. The new standard is designed to guide current and future wetlands digital mapping projects and enhance the overall quality and consistency of wetlands data. Quality data on wetlands are considered critical for planning effective conservation strategies to benefit fish and wildlife resources now and in the future.
