About the Award

This award recognizes an individual or a team representing Federal, State, Tribal, regional, and (or) local government, academia, or nonprofit and professional organization that has developed an outstanding, innovative, and operational tool, application, or service capability used by multiple organizations that furthers the vision of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). The award honors Doug D. Nebert who was a respected colleague, technical visionary, and recognized national leader in the establishment of spatial data infrastructures (SDI).
The vision of the NSDI is to assure that spatial data from multiple sources—Federal, State, Tribal, regional, and local governments, academia, and the private sector—are available and easily integrated to enhance the understanding of our physical and cultural world.
Award Recognition
The award consists of a citation and plaque, which are presented to the recipient by the FGDC Chair at an appropriate public forum. The name of the recipient is also inscribed on a permanent plaque, which is displayed by the FGDC.
Award Selection
An interagency team of SDI experts from the FGDC will review all nominations and make a recommendation for the award to the FGDC Chair who will make the final decision on the award. The award information will be posted on the FGDC website at www.fgdc.gov.
The award is based on the following foundational precepts:

- Interoperability
- Use of standards
- Advancement of NSDI principles
- Service to communities of users
- Developed once, used by many
- Improved performance and service
- Realworld application
Considerations
- Specific individual and team achievements should be demonstrable via leadership of NSDI related working group or committee, documented in peer-reviewed, industry-recognized credible publication, presentations at professional conferences, a working application, or other credible basis.
- The award is available to an individual or a team representing Federal, State, Tribal, regional, and (or) local government, academia, or nonprofit and professional organizations.
- The tool, application or service developed by this individual or team that meets the criteria.
- The nominee must be a United States citizen.
- Nomination Authority: Nominations are accepted from national and international public and private sector individuals, teams, organizations, and professional societies. Previous nominees not selected as recipients may be renominated for future awards.
Eligibility
Any US Citizen or team working in the field of spatial data infrastructure is eligible to receive the Doug D. Nebert NSDI Champion of the Year Award.
We accept nominations from public and private sector individuals, teams, organizations, and professional societies. Only nominations from US Citizens are accepted. Previous nominees not selected as recipients may be renominated for future awards.
An individual award recognizes achievements in the development of an outstanding, innovative, and operational tool, application, or service capability used by multiple organizations that furthers the vision of the NSDI. Consideration will be given to sustained career achievements or singular contributions of major importance to the development of the NSDI.
A team award recognizes a group of individuals or part of an organization that has developed an outstanding, innovative, and operational tool, application, or service capability used by multiple organizations that furthers the vision of the NSDI.
Nomination Process
Nominations for the Doug D. Nebert NSDI Champion of the Year Award may be submitted by national, international, private and public sector individuals, organizations, professional societies and academic institutions. Previous nominees not selected as recipients may be renominated for future awards. The nominee must be a US Citizen.
Nomination Package
The nomination submission deadline for 2019 is September 15. Guidelines may vary slightly from year to year. Please consult the web site each year for updates.
Doug D. Nebert Award Privacy Statement

Paperwork Reduction Act Information
To comply with the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 (PRA), we are notifying the public that we have submitted to the Office of Management
and Budget (OMB) an information collection request (ICR) for the collection of nominations for the Doug D. Nebert NSDI Champion of the Year Award.
