Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and Global Earth Observations System of Systems (GEOSS)

FGDC Partnership | Group on Earth Observations

The intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO) is dedicated to achieving societal benefits worldwide through comprehensive, coordinated and sustained observations of the Earth system. The many nations and participating organizations that comprise GEO are now implementing the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). The GEOSS 10-Year Implementation Plan and related information are available from the GEO Web site at  http://earthobservations.org

The FGDC Secretariat coordinates NSDI and GSDI efforts with FGDC member agencies, academia and industry representatives having similar interests. The FGDC Secretariat leads or co-leads tasks related to NSDI, RSDI and GSDI activities.

FGDC Contributions to the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Workplan

2006 Contributions

  • To support the vision of a global system-of-systems for access to all types of geospatial information, the international Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Executive Committee has officially accepted the 2006 Work Plan, Version 4 as the basis of GEO activities for the year.
  • The FGDC Secretariat led or co-lead three tasks this year related to geospatial data and Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI).
    • The first task (DA-06-04) will help facilitate the discovery of geospatial information through harmonization of metadata and data products.
    • The second task (DA-06-06) will promote the adoption of existing SDI protocols and system interfaces.
    • The third task (DA-06-07) is to define a model web portal system that would provide access to existing distributed national portals and systems. The 2006 workplan and task sheets are available at: ftp://ftp.wmo.int/Projects/GEO/
