Common Alerting Protocol

FGDC has been instrumental in developing and promoting the new Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) standard and in implementing associated new technology. CAP promises to be a breakthrough standard that opens the door to new alerting systems and technical innovation by virtue of its ability to address all-hazard warnings across all manner of communications channels. However, actual implementation technology was lacking when the Department of the Interior was instructed by OMB to proceed with CAP implementation in FY 2005. FGDC staff developed prototype software in support of CAP and arranged servicing within DOI and USGS, and between DOI, DHS, and NOAA. This leadership resulted in live implementation of CAP alerts for Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Landslides.
