Propagation of FGDC-Endorsed Metadata Standards across the Great Lakes Basin
Award Number 07HQAG0102, Category 1: FGDC-Endorsed Standards Implementation Assistance and Outreach
Michigan State University's Remote Sensing & Geographic
Information Science Research and Outreach Services (RS&GIS) will
develop a thorough but concise tool set that will enhance a user’s
ability to extract useful information from geospatial databases. Two
goals of this project are: (i) to teach the geospatial producer
community to adopt consistent FGDC-endorsed metadata standards and (ii)
to enable users of geospatial data to maximize the extraction of useful
information from rich geospatial databases via metadata searches. While
working toward these goals, RS&GIS will reinforce the importance of
robust metadata practices,
namely by emphasizing the synergistic potential they offer for sharing
data with multiple audiences. By concentrating on the FGDC-endorsed
metadata Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata
(FGDC-STD-001-1998) and the Content Standard for Digital Orthoimagery
(FGDC-STD-008-1999), RS&GIS will address both a general and a
specialized geospatial audience in the Great Lakes Region, and, more
broadly, the geospatial community at large. While the bulk of the
effort will focus on the first standard, RS&GIS will integrate an
enrichment module focused on the specialized area of digital
orthoimagery. Three tasks will be undertaken as part of this project:
(A) creation of teaching materials, (B) hands-on training, and (C)
distribution via the internet.
