Planning for the Iowa Geospatial Infrastructure
The goal of this project is to complete the Iowa Geographic Information Council’s (IGIC) strategic plan and develop a business plan for the creation of the Iowa Geospatial Infrastructure (IGI). The resulting effort will facilitate the implementation of National Spatial Data Infrastructure by assessing the needs of local entities that are not currently using geospatial technology, as well as those trying to maintain existing investments, for creating a high quality local level datasets that support the Iowa Geospatial Infrastructure.
Successful implementation of a statewide lidar project has shown that creative solutions can be achieved to fund major GIS projects. A window of opportunity exists to extend these ideas to include funding for creation of high-quality GIS datasets at the local level. The business plan will assess the needs of local entities that are not currently using GIS and those struggling to maintain existing investments. The business plan will explore how to meet these needs while building a statewide geospatial infrastructure that can address many different relevant issues, including economic development, emergency management and environmental quality at various levels. The IGI will be Iowa’s contribution to the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.
