Boreholes: depth or altitude?

So what's the scoop on boreholes? Regarding the Vertical Coordinate System Definition, do I use Altitude System Definition or Depth System Definition. The examples I have seen on-line (and the list of provided depth datum names) suggest "depth" is used for measurements below the water surface and "altitude" is used for everything else, including boreholes made into solid ground. Any thoughts? Thanks.
